As John McCain and his wildly erratic, flailing campaign fling every politically toxic epithet in Chairman Rove’s Little Red Book at Barack Obama, the national polls have tightened ever so slightly. They haven’t tightened as much as the McCainiacs wish they had, nor as much as the Obamaphiles fear they have.

The trend of the last three days of all the polling data I could acquire shows Obama leading McCain 49.2 - 43.8. That’s a lead of 5.4%. It’s still a substantial lead, and not, as the McCainiacs have been saying, within the margin of error. This is, however, the closest the race has been since October 5-6.

Certainly, it’s a little uncomfortable to think Obama only leads by 5.4% at this point, given the complete disaster of the McCain campaign, McCain’s and Palin’s disastrous debate performances, an economic crisis brought on by McCain’s party, an unpopular war started by McCain’s party, the McCain campaign’s creepy, racist rallies, and Obama’s incredible fundraising ability, but this is American politics.

There is a significant segment of the population that will fall, again and again, for the hate, greed, and fear tactics of the Republican Party.

It’s really a simple tactic, though clearly not an admirable one.

Divide up the country into small groups, each at opposition with the others. Then, assemble a wild-eyed wingnut coalition of religious crazies, strict constructionists, and free-market zombies, sprinkle on top a generous helping of social conservatives who will vote against their own economic interests to prevent men from marrying each other, and add a dash of low-information voters.

That’s a winning recipe.

It’s also vile.

But, I carry on, soothed by the sound of my clicking keyboard.

What I wanted to show y’all today is a list of States and who’s leading the polls there.

What’s interesting when looking at this list, which is sorted by the magnitude of the lead in the RCP poll average, is who won all of these States in 2000 and 2004. It wasn’t Al Gore and John Kerry.

And, who’s leading right now in 7 out of 11 of these Bush States?  That’s right, America!  Barack Hussein Obama!

Now, if you start flipping these States where Obama leads back to McCain, you can flip all the way down to Virginia, and Obama still leads in the electoral college.  Conversely, to have a realistic chance of becoming President McCain, Senator McCain would have to win all of these States.

I’ve been carrying on for weeks about Obama only needing to win Colorado to secure his election.  Now, his lead is larger in Virginia than it is in Colorado.

Either way…

Sayonara, McBush Regime!
